We’ve all been there. You step into the bathroom, flick on the heater, and suddenly you’re staring into a light so bright it feels like you’re being interrogated by the police. Those old-school lamp heaters are loud, blinding, and the heat is always patchy. That’s why we’ve been moving toward infrared (IR) systems. They focus on the warmth, not the light, and they actually hold up in a damp room. The battle against steam Bathrooms are brutal on electronics. Between the steam and the occasional splash, things tend to fry. Cheap heaters usually leak at the seals, which is a fast track to a short circuit or a dead filament. We look for high IP ratings—basically, a fancy way of saying the unit is tightly sealed. When you’re wiring these in, the gaskets act like a shield, keeping moisture far away from the live terminals. It’s just safer. Wait, how is the heat different? Most heaters try to warm up the air. But air moves. You feel a draft, the heat drifts away, and you’re still shivering. Infrared is different. It sends out waves that hit you and the walls directly. It’s radiant heat. You don’t have to stand around waiting for the whole room to reach a certain temperature; you feel the warmth the second you turn it on. We use quartz tubes to make sure that energy goes exactly where it needs to. A few things to keep in mind Nothing is perfect. Because these units are sealed up tight to keep water out, they might take a few seconds longer to reach full blast than some open-element lamp. Also, don’t forget about your wiring. If you’re installing a high-density IR array, double-check your circuit breaker and your wire gauge. Using wires that are too thin under a constant load is a recipe for overheating. But here’s the real win: these things last. Because the filaments are protected from the humidity, they don’t oxidize and burn out nearly as fast as those old halogen bulbs.
