
Why we put our bathroom heaters through the “steam chamber”
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got thick steam, wild temperature swings, and water vapor trying to get into everything. It’s a brutal environment. That’s why we don’t just build these infrared lamps and hope for the best. Before a single batch leaves our doors, we put them through some pretty intense damp-heat aging tests. Basically, we try to break them so you don’t have to. The problem with steam Water vapor is sneaky. It finds the tiniest gaps in the housing or the seals and just… crawls in. If the seals around the quartz tube aren’t perfect, or if a connection is even a fraction of a millimeter loose, moisture hits the high-voltage parts. That’s when things go sideways. You get short circuits or “tracking,” which is a fancy way of saying the electricity is going where it shouldn’t. To stop this, we use aging chambers that mimic months of hot showers in just a few days. We crank the humidity up to 95% and cycle the heat. We basically force the moisture into every possible crevice to see if the unit holds up. Where things usually fail Most of the time, the trouble starts where the wires enter the lamp housing. If moisture gets in there, it reacts with the metal and creates oxidation. Here’s the ripple effect: oxidation creates resistance. Resistance makes the terminal get hotter. Eventually, it gets so hot it melts the insulation. By testing this early, we can tell if our gaskets or potting compounds are actually doing their job or if they’re just for show. The trade-off Now, making something truly waterproof comes with a catch. We have to use thicker seals and tighter enclosures. Because of that, the heater might have a slightly larger footprint, or it might take a few seconds longer to warm up than a lamp designed for a dry warehouse. But it’s a trade we’re happy to make. You might lose a tiny bit of airflow, but you gain a heater that won’t trip your circuit breaker the moment you take a hot shower. To us, a reliable seal beats raw airflow every single time.
