
Keeping Your Heaters Alive in the Steam
If you’re putting infrared lamps in a bathroom or out on a patio, you’re basically fighting a war against two things: moisture and thermal shock. Most standard quartz tubes just can’t hack it. They’ll fail—fast. That’s why we use explosion-proof quartz glass. It sounds intense, but it’s really just about making sure the tube doesn’t shatter the second a stray drop of cold water hits a scorching hot surface.
The “Snap” Factor
Here is the thing about thermal shock. Even though quartz is generally tough, a single drop of rain or a splash from the shower creates a tiny, freezing-cold spot on a white-hot tube. That creates a massive amount of stress in one tiny area. If the glass isn’t treated for this, it doesn’t just crack—it snaps. We treat our quartz to handle those wild temperature swings so the vacuum seal stays tight and the lamp stays in one piece.
It’s All in the Seals
But “explosion-proof” isn’t just about the glass itself. It’s also about where the tube meets the end caps. We use high-temp silicone or ceramic seals to keep steam from sneaking into the filament chamber. Why? Because the moment moisture touches that tungsten filament, the lamp is toast. It burns out instantly. And don’t forget the housing. You need an IP-rated setup. The lamp is the part that gets hot, but your wiring and connectors are the parts that actually fail if they aren’t shielded. Use a cheap seal, and you’ll be scrubbing oxidation off your contacts within a month.
The Power Trade-off
These tubes are great because they deliver short-wave infrared heat. It hits your skin directly. It doesn’t waste time trying to warm up the air around you, which is the only way to actually stay warm when you’re standing in a drafty outdoor space. But there’s a catch: they’re power-hungry. High-wattage quartz lamps pull a lot of current. You’ve got to make sure your circuit breakers and wire gauges are thick enough to handle the load. If you skimp on the wiring, you’ll get voltage drops. And when that happens, your lamps just won’t get hot enough to do their job.
